You’re invited to volunteer with your local Georgetown Club on Saturday, April 29, as part of the Georgetown University Alumni Association’s 10th Annual Hoyas Give Baxa—a coordinated day of community service.

Uphold this Blue and Gray tradition by pitching in with a service project in your community.

This event is sponsored by Georgetown University and will follow University and local public health guidelines. We will provide information on any public health requirements, which are dependent on public health conditions, closer to the event date.

Unless otherwise noted, project registration closes on Wednesday, April 26.

OC Hoyas Channel Cleanup

For this year’s Hoyas Give Baxa, the Georgetown Club of Orange County is partnering with Surfrider Foundation-North Orange County for a channel cleanup! Learn about the watershed and what does not make it to a landfill. The Santa Ana River starts in Big Bear and has numerous tributaries that feed into it before dumping into the ocean. Volunteers will walk amongst the tall grass and weeds in the bed of the Santa River searching for trash that has found its way into the Santa Ana River on its way to the ocean.

  • Space is limited to 20 participants, so please register early!
  • Garbage bags will be provided.
  • What to wear: Pants, closed-toed shoes or boots that can get dirty. We encourage you to bring a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, a reusable water bottle (please avoid plastic bottles), and reusable gloves (gardening or mechanic).
  • Parking: Parking fills up quickly at the start. Feel free to park in the neighborhood. Please do NOT park in the plant nursery. Parking is limited near the check-in tent.
  • Join the group for lunch after the project’s completion.

Fun at the Farm

The Club of Sacramento is partnering with The Table Farm. Volunteers will help build the garden’s infrastructure for the new growing season. Tasks may include weeding, harvesting, seeding, planting, etc.

  • The Farm is located at the back of St. Robert School (in case GPS tries to direct you to the front of the school).
  • Parking: There is parking on the street right outside the farm.
  • What to wear: Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, closed-toed shoes, and a pair of gloves (we have some at the farm if you need them), and your own water.
  • Please note—there are no restrooms on site.

The Village United Workshop

The Georgetown Club of San Diego is partnering with Hoover Senior High for this year’s Hoyas Give Baxa. Amidst a pandemic that has exacerbated injustices among marginalized communities, it is critical that we come to each other’s aid to provide support, share resources, and sustain hope. The Village United is a community event that aims to achieve this. Hoover High School students and parents, City Heights middle and elementary schools, and the City Heights community in general will be invited to join us in a day full of college, career, and basic needs workshops, resource booths, and activities. Georgetown alumni will provide resume and career counseling opportunities to Hoover High School students.

This event is a collaboration among Avenues for Success, Reality Changers, the Hoover High School academies, the Office of County Board of Supervisor Chair Nathan Fletcher, and the San Diego Unified School District Community Schools initiative.

  • Age requirement: Ages 16 and older.
  • What to wear: Business casual is preferred, but Georgetown spirited clothing is welcomed.

The Club of Tampa is partnering with Metropolitan Ministries. Participants will assist the garden leaders with a variety of outdoor tasks including: weeding, watering, fertilizing, potting, harvesting, and more! This event is outside and may require some light lifting/manual labor.

  • What to wear: Please be sure to wear comfortable clothing suitable for working outdoors, as well as closed-toed shoes. It is encouraged for participants to leave purses and electronics at home or out of sight in your trunk or another secure location while volunteering.
  • When you arrive: Before heading to the Tampa Heights Community Garden, please report to the Volunteer Engagement Center located at 120 E Ross Ave. near the center of the building with the green awning. Here you will check-in with a Metropolitan Ministries staff member, grab a name tag, and either walk or drive over to the garden.

Hoyas Running to Give Baxa

Join the Club of Charlotte as they partner with Carolina Youth Coalition (CYC) for this year’s Hoyas Give Baxa! Volunteers will be helping CYC with their 5k College Signing Day. Georgetown will be the only university partnering with CYC for this event. Participants will help with check in, be course monitors, pass out post-race snacks, and assist in post-event breakdown.

  • The project runs from 6-11 a.m., but volunteers do not need to be present the entire time.
  • Running or walking the 5k is optional. There will be a $5 discount per entrant as long as five Hoyas participate.

Join the Club of Philadelphia as they partner with Cradles to Crayons (C2C) for this year’s Hoyas Give Baxa! C2C’s mission is to provide children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive—at home, at school, at play. Tasks range from sorting clothing and book donations, to stuffing backpacks for the thousands of school-age children C2C serves, to making cards that go into the backpacks.

Pocket Prairie Restoration Movement

The Club of Dallas Ft. Worth is partnering with Warren Ferris Historical Cemetery. Come and learn about the very popular Pocket Prairie restoration movement taking place all over the DFW area by joining the club at the Warren Ferris Historical Cemetery in East Dallas, a few blocks from the Dallas Arboretum. Work has been ongoing by volunteers to convert a neglected property into a beautiful wildlife sanctuary and Monarch Way Station. The group has invited volunteers to spend the morning helping to remove invasive plant species to allow the native plants to thrive and flourish. To help lead the project they have brought in an expert, Carol Clark, to educate participants on the importance of prairie restoration using native plants and teaching volunteers how to identify the plants to remove. Carol is a botany enthusiast, a Texas Master Naturalist, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, and a Conservation Specialist with Monarch Watch. She and her husband own and operate Clark Haven Farm, a wildlife preserve and custom seed business in Cooke County. Uphold the Georgetown spirit by pitching in on this worthwhile service project. We want to see you in action!

  • What to bring: Water bottle, garden gloves, and a hand trowel (if you have them).
  • Healthy snacks, coffee, juice, and lunch will be provided.
  • After lunch, treat yourself to a walk on one of the various trails at White Rock Lake, rent a kayak, or explore the Dallas Arboretum (Artscape weekend!)

  • Space is limited to 20 participants, so please register early!
  • Age requirement: Children 13 and younger must be chaperoned by an adult.
  • What to wear: Closed-toe shoes and work clothes
  • What to bring: The organization will provide gloves and some tools. Volunteers are encouraged to bring garden clippers, trowel, shovel, rake, and trash bags.
  • After registering, participants will need to sign the Volunteer Agreement.
  • Parking: The lot adjacent to the museum is a public pay lot on the weekend. The museum can provide a few parking passes, but can make no guarantee of the number of spots that will be available that day. There is metered street parking available too.
