History

The Georgetown University Alumni Association (GUAA) was founded in 1881. For the first six decades, there was no elected leadership. The title of GUAA President was an honorific, generally given to a prominent elder graduate. Its first president was Washington banker and philanthropist William W. Corcoran; his successor, former U.S. Congressman Charles J. Faulkner (C’1822).

Following a series of alumni reunions around the sesquicentennial of the University in 1939, GUAA President Frank Hogan (L’1902) was asked to convene a convention of regional alumni leaders to draft a constitution to revitalize the GUAA. Representatives from 33 clubs met at the 1940 reunion to draft a constitution and elect a standing Board to oversee GUAA and drive the collection of annual dues, set at $3.50 per year. The initial request garnered 236 dues paying members, a modest but encouraging start.

The were 18 initial members of Board of Governors, along with a treasurer, vice-president, and a new president, New York attorney Martin Conboy (L’1898). Faculty representatives Vincent McDonough S.J. and James S. Ruby (C’27), and Georgetown University President Arthur O’Leary S.J. were selected as ex-officio members. The combined Board represented 10 different states and five of the six schools of the University.

The first meeting of the Board took place in February 1941. The Board met three times annually, including during wartime, despite Ruby being absent due to military service. Following the war, efforts were made to further bolster GUAA through the Governors, with the incorporation of the Association in 1947, the fundraising campaigns for Alumni House and McDonough Gymnasium, the inauguration of the John Carroll Awards dinner in 1952, and the first Alumni Annual Fund in 1954. From its outset, Governors were elected by alumni at-large, which remains the only University-wide election of its kind today.

Many of Georgetown’s most prominent alumni of their eras have been elected to the Board, including Thomas Leavey (1952-55), Richard McCooey (1958-61), Edward Bennett Williams (1965-68), Paul Tagliabue (1970-73) and Bill Clinton (1971-74).

Nearly 900 men and women have served as members of the Board of Governors, representing 43 states, five countries, and each of the University’s undergraduate and graduate schools.

An Insider’s Look at the Board of Governors

The Board of Governors is the elected board of the Georgetown University Alumni Association (GUAA) and is the longest standing board at Georgetown. Since 1941, its members have provided counsel to the president and administration and have served as trusted advocates for the global Georgetown community. Hear from a few of our distinguished board members as they share stories on why they choose to serve and the impact of their service on the Georgetown community.

  • 1st Term Governor

    Tim Duffin (M’88, R’90)

    tim duffin

    Clarksville, TN

I love giving back to the great university that allowed me to fulfill my dreams of becoming a father, a practicing Christian, and a surgeon. Georgetown instilled in me the value of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and taught me to go into the world and do great things for others. Serving as a governor on the board has been an excellent opportunity to give back by helping guide critical alumni programming that helps maintain the connection with the university I so deeply respect.

I first learned about the GUAA Board of Governors while participating as a mentor for the Georgetown Scholarship Program. The scholarship program director, who is also an alumna, suggested I consider serving on the board. Before becoming a governor, I also participated on several boards including the board of directors for the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, the E-MDS medical software advisory board, local high school athletic boards, and local hospital executive boards. The work on these boards prepared me for this interesting and challenging work with the Board of Governors. I am able to collaborate with colleagues to fulfill the mission of GUAA, which is a truly valuable experience.

My time as a governor has shown me that time, talent and treasure are displayed in varied ways, but the passion my fellow governors and staff show is inspiring. I have participated in a number of worthwhile and important initiatives including Hoya Gateway Speed Networking Events. This program allowed me continue my passion for interacting with students by directly engaging with the undergraduates and providing guidance (and hopefully reassurance) that they are indeed on a great pathway by being part of the Georgetown community.

  • Appointed Governor

    Melissa Bradley (B’89)

    melissa bradley

    Washington, D.C.

I am honored to serve my second term on the Board of Governors. I learned about the board through my ongoing engagement as an alumna with admissions and other alumni events. I also remain actively engaged through various clubs and McDonough School of Business departments. I wanted to join the board in order to share my perspective as a faculty member at the McDonough School. As an alumna and now a faculty member, I bring varied perspectives to the role in order to help engage these critical stakeholders within the university community.

I started my service as a governor in 2004, took a break, and returned this year as head of the Strategic Planning Committee. In this role, I am helping craft a strategic plan for GUAA for the next three years. The new plan reflects the interest and goals of the entire Board of Governors and aligns with university priorities. As head of the newly-formed Diversity Committee, I will also continue to help the Alumni Association leadership reflect the diversity of the university, and bring varied voices and perspectives to the Board of Governors.

My unconditional love for Georgetown and my desire to continue to improve its culture for students, staff, faculty, and alumni has empowered me as a governor and now as a senator as well. I want to make a difference and work with fellow board members to tackle important issues impacting alumni around the world. It is a treasured opportunity to be surrounded by so many who have had similar experiences and who share a deep commitment to Georgetown. It is a privilege to serve, learn from my colleagues in this leadership position and to be able to have an impact on those who will come after me.

  • 1st Term Governor

    Jenifer Rogers (F’85, L’88)

    jenifer rogers

    Tokyo, Japan

I was familiar with the Board of Governors as an alumna, however, it wasn’t until I attended one John Carroll Weekend that I understood the governor role and what the job entailed. I have attended John Carroll Weekends in Los Angeles and Rome, as well as the International Alumni Weekend in Hong Kong in 2015. It was at these events that I became more familiar with the Board of Governors activities, which then sparked my interest in serving.

Since I am based in Tokyo, I bring an international perspective to the board and look forward to sharing my global experiences, especially on the perception of Georgetown University abroad. While Georgetown is well-known outside the U.S., I feel that there is room to further promote and raise awareness, especially in Asia. I hope that through my participation as a governor, I can deepen my understanding of the full university community and help to effectively get the word out about its activities, academic opportunities and thought leadership as an institution.

I am a proud double Hoya and have worked outside the U.S. for more than 20 years. I have been active in many of the overseas alumni clubs, including Tokyo, London and Hong Kong, and was appointed to the Georgetown University Asian Law Alumni Advisory Board in 2013. In addition to being an active alumna, I recently endowed a scholarship in my name at the Georgetown University Law School. Last year, I became a Director of a major listed Japanese trading company, Mitsui & Co. (the first foreign woman to ever be appointed). These experiences have provided me with the insight, knowledge and leadership skills to serve as a governor.

After being appointed as a governor this summer, I traveled across the globe to attend the Board of Governors retreat in Middleburg, Virginia in June and was very impressed with the enthusiasm and motivation of my fellow board members. There, we learned about the GUAA Strategic Plan and the committee-developed action plans that aligned with it. I look forward to contributing as a governor in a focused and meaningful way.

  • 2nd Term Senator

    Vikram Agrawal (F’07)

    bikram agrawal

    New York, NY

The Board of Governors is the type of organization where your experience is directly related to the amount of effort you put into it. As an undergraduate, I was blessed to have the opportunity to serve as a student governor. It was by far one of my best experiences on the Hilltop. I met a great group of dedicated alumni who soon became mentors and friends. In my current role, I have partnered with the Board of Governors and helped lead several initiatives to increase student and alumni interactions on the Hilltop and around the world. Students are our future alumni, so it is important for them to experience the enriching and diverse alumni community and begin to foster an appreciation for being a part of the Georgetown family.

Also as a result of my experience as a student governor, I became extremely involved with GUAA after graduation. I joined the Wall Street Alliance and local alumni clubs, spoke on various student/alumni panels, became an Alumni Admissions Program interviewer, served as a regional leader of Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance, and have served as co-chair of my class committee since 2007. From these volunteer experiences, I developed a comprehensive perspective of what it is like to be part of the alumni community from being a student to a young alumnus.

My connection with and affinity for Georgetown has been truly enriched by serving as a governor. Not only are we tasked with providing leadership and strategic direction for GUAA and Georgetown’s global alumni community, we also help implement tangible programs that benefit both students and alumni. The Board of Governors is made up of dedicated alumni who understand that Georgetown is more than just bricks & mortar. It is truly a diverse, global community and it’s our duty to make sure that it remains special for generations to come.

  • Senator

    Mary Machado-Schammel (C’80, MBA’15)

    mary machado

    Pasadena, CA

I became familiar with the Board of Governors through my involvement as president of the Georgetown Club of Southern California. My time as club president inspired me to take the next step of service to the alumni community in the role of Governor. As a club leader, I was able to address many issues faced by a growing club in a major city such as leadership, diversity in programming and covering a large geographic area. Armed with this knowledge, it was my goal to further address these issues on a larger scale when I became a governor and to lend my insight to helping other clubs around the world.

Shortly after my term began, I became very involved with the Alumni Clubs Committee. Under the leadership of GUAA Executive Director Bill Reynolds, the extraordinary Georgetown staff and GUAA leadership, the Board of Governors has made tremendous strides in fostering the exponential growth of both U.S. and international clubs. We truly have an engaged global alumni network through local, regional, national and international initiatives and events. Through my work as a governor, I have helped develop the Wall Street Alliance West, which aims to raise the awareness of the university amongst the West Coast financial community.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being a governor and now a senator as well. This opportunity has provided a means to stay connected with Georgetown University; to make a difference in our Los Angeles, D.C. and global communities; and to work with a dynamic and committed group of Hoyas. Being back on the Hilltop for leadership weekends also inspired me to become a double Hoya as a recent graduate of the Global MBA program which is a partnership between Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and Walsh School of Foreign Service and ESADE Business and Law School in Barcelona, Spain.
