In a notable 31-year career in the Foreign Service, he served as Ambassador to Colombia and Brazil, as well as Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs. While serving in Bogota, he was kidnapped by terrorists and held for 61 days. He participated in the negotiations for his own release and that of his colleagues and was awarded the Department of States Medal for Valor.
