Title:The Malibooz and The Quarrymen Celebrate the 70th Birthday of John Lennon in Concert

On Friday, October 1, Our Lady of Malibu School hosted a fundraiser headlined by The Quarrymen, the band that would eventually become the Beatles, and also featuring The Malibooz (formed by Georgetown’s own John Zambetti and Walter Egan).

It was a singular evening of great music and living history, punctuated by stories of the band’s formative years and funny accounts of what it has meant to be a part of The Quarrymen throughout the decades.

Zambetti (C ’70) and Egan (C ’70), whose own chart-topping band, The Malibooz, opened the show, also regaled the audience with great music, impressive resumes and funny anecdotes about their own band’s colorful history.

Emceed by Chris Carter of “Breakfast with the Beatles”, the fundraiser’s purpose was two-fold – to commemorate the recent passing of the school’s Monsignor John Sheridan and Sister Mar Campbell, and to celebrate what would have been Lennon’s 70th birthday.

Three of the original Quarrymen (Len Garry, Rod Davis and Colin Hanton) are currently touring the US in support of the newly released movie, Nowhere Boy, about John’s early years. Zambetti and Egan, who are currently promoting their own new CD of British Invasion songs, Queens’ English (a nod to Egan’s childhood growing up in Queens, New York and the original Malibooz playing at the 1965 NY World’s Fair in Queens, NY), pulled together the show.

Playing in a parking lot to an audience of very appreciative fans, both bands put on quite a show, regaling the audience with memorable stories of their histories, their challenges, their successes, and their lives.

Following the concert, guests were treated to fish and chips and the opportunity to get a picture with The Quarrymen and mingle with members from both bands.
