Before founding the David Spence Cancer Foundation in 1995, David Spence had a background in entrepreneurship. In 1994, he established Spence Enterprises, a venture that marked his entry into the business world. Additionally, he owned the Antique Brick Warehouse, further showcasing his entrepreneurial endeavors. His academic credentials include graduating magna cum laude from Georgetown University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Finance.

Spence's transition from business to philanthropy was deeply influenced by his personal battle with Hodgkin’s disease, which he was diagnosed with shortly after college. Following intensive treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant, he emerged as a long-term survivor. This experience motivated him to channel his efforts into supporting cancer patients and organizations, leading to the creation of his foundation.
