The Changing Landscape of Journalism in an Era of “Fake News”

The fourth Hoyas In Letters event, “The Changing Landscape of Journalism in an Era of ‘Fake News’”, featured a panel of acclaimed GU journalists who spoke to an audience of nearly 100 attendees – our biggest event to-date.

The April 27, 2017 discussion demonstrated both the draw of the evening’s topic and the enthusiastic alumni response to Hoyas in Letters, an alumni initiative that connects and engages members of the Georgetown community who are passionate about words and the power of writing.

The panel was made up of: Sarah Mimms (C’10), deputy politics editor at BuzzFeed; Mark Bulik (F’80), senior editor at The New York Times; and Russell Adams (C’98), an editor at The Wall Street Journal. Heather Salerno (C’93, MA ’94), an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in USA Today, People, The Washington Post, and The Journal News served as moderator.

Following a lively and thoughtful discussion, including when and how to use the word “lie” in print and online, alumni lingered for networking with fellow guests and with the evening’s esteemed panelists. The gathering was hosted by WeWork in Midtown Manhattan.
