Title:GEMA LA Alumni Panel: Creating Content in Hollywood – What’s Next?

The Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance (GEMA) hosted a panel in Los Angeles on the evening of June 26, 2024 entitled: “Creating Content in Hollywood – What’s Next”? Amid a contracting entertainment industry and looming fears about the implications of artificial intelligence, the event, held at the Crescent Theater in Beverly Hills, sought to tackle how film, television and media as a whole might move forward to meet the moment and prevail against the industry’s current challenges.

The panel, moderated by USA TODAY reporter Charles Trepany (C’19), featured insight from esteemed entertainment executives and Georgetown alumni: television writer and producer Adam Countee (C’03), Bibby Dunn (C’09) of Mark Gordon Pictures, Lawrence Grey (L’96) of Grey Matter Productions and Diana Williams (B’89) of Kinetic Energy Entertainment. Together, the panelists discussed what types of shows and movies seem to resonate with audiences today (“prestigurals,” which combine elements of both prestige television and procedurals, might be the future), how content can adapt to make the most of technological innovations like AI and what Hollywood institutions can learn from popular social media content creators and new media. Panelists also offered advice and encouragement to younger alumni seeking careers in the industry: It’s not an easy thing to do, but, if you know you must do it, you can find a way. Afterward, Georgetown alumni from across the generations mingled in the lobby, enjoying wine and sandwiches.
