A History of Jesuit Colleges and Universities: Georgetown’s Impact on the Jesuit Network

Virtual Lecture:
A History of Jesuit Colleges and Universities: Georgetown’s Impact on the Jesuit Network

Thursday, April 25, 2024
7:00pm (Eastern), 6:00pm (Central)
Via Zoom

Georgetown University is the oldest of the Jesuit colleges and its influence on other schools in the Jesuit network was profound. This lecture tells the fascinating story of how the Jesuits built one of the largest and most successful college networks in the country, and how Georgetown made that growth possible. Learn how Georgetown faculty and alumni founded many great Jesuit schools like Boston College and Holy Cross; how the oldest colleges in California, Missouri, Alabama, and elsewhere have Georgetown ties; and how some Jesuit colleges far from DC awarded degrees in Georgetown’s name. Learn why, to this day, many Jesuit schools still use blue and gray as their school colors and use the word “Hoya” in their fight songs.

Michael Rizzi (SFS ’04) is the author of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States: A History (CUA Press, 2022), the first comprehensive history of Jesuit higher education. (www.michaelrizziauthor.com).
