From Enemy to Ally: Sino-American Relations, 1952-1979, Washington Recognizes
This is the story of the People’s Republic of China’s success in having Washington recognize Beijing as the capital of mainland China, replacing Taiwan’s National Government’s claims to the contrary. Who would have thought that talks concerning the repatriation of POWs in 1952 would result in diplomatic recognition in 1979. This story is replete with unintended consequences and unexpected changes in leadership which transformed enemies to allies without abandoning Taiwan in the process. Based heavily upon the recently released FRUS volumes on China in 2013.
