Awards

Samuel A. Halsey Jr. Award

In 2002, the Georgetown University African American Advisory Board created the Samuel A. Halsey Jr. Award to honor the outstanding contributions of Georgetown University Black alumni. Presented at the annual Patrick Healy Dinner, the award is named for Samuel A. Halsey Jr., the first African American undergraduate alumnus of Georgetown University, who graduated in 1953. The award is given to an alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated commitment and service to Georgetown and to the wider community, and who has achieved professional success and excellence in his or her field.

Distinguished Leader Award

In 2018, the Distinguished Leader Award was created by the African American Advisory Board to honor the outstanding contributions of Georgetown University’s African American administrators, faculty, and staff. The award is given to a member of Georgetown’s campus community who has made significant contributions to the university and demonstrated unwavering commitment to the experiences of African American members of the Georgetown University community.

Marcia G. Cooke Award

In 2023, the Georgetown University Alumni Association Black Alumni Council created the Marcia G. Cooke Award to recognize a Black Georgetown University alumna or alumnus from any Georgetown school, campus, or degree program, less than 15 years since graduation, who has made a significant positive impact in his or her community, profession, or field. Presented at the annual Patrick Healy Dinner, the award is named for The Honorable Marcia G. Cooke (SFS’75), who served as the first female and first Black President of the Georgetown University Alumni Association, serving from 1996-1998; a 2000 John Carroll Award winner; a member of the Board of Governors from 1992-2007; a founding member of the Georgetown University African American Advisory Board; and a member of the Board of Regents and Board of Directors.
