Title:3 Tips to Keep your Social Media Brand Going Strong

Welcome to the Neighborhood this year was again a huge success for Georgetown Clubs. There were over 1,726 engagements with posts using #W2N this year—that’s a lot of likes, comments, and shares! That’s a great start to building your Club’s Social Media presence for the year, but your posting shouldn’t slow down just because Welcome to the Neighborhood is over.

As Regional Club Leaders, you know that managing your club’s social media presence can be a challenge. We know many of you enjoyed learning from social media experts Anupam Chakravarty (F’10, MA’14) and Ashley Singleton (MBA’20) at Fall Leadership Weekend this year, but it can be hard to remember all their tips and tricks. Here are three ways to keep your club’s social media brand top of page and top of mind this year:

1. Keep your posts at the top of alumni newsfeeds

Facebook determines “who sees what and where” in your newsfeed by using a fancy algorithm. So how do you make sure your posts stay at the top of alumni newsfeeds?

Start by posting once a day on your club’s Facebook page to keep your content at the top of alumni newsfeeds. If you don’t have an event to promote or a local alum lined up for a spotlight, look to other Georgetown pages such as Georgetown University Alumni Association, Georgetown University, Georgetown Alumni, Georgetown Athletics, and even other Georgetown alumni clubs. After all, sharing someone else’s content is the ultimate compliment! You can add commentary to the reposts to make them more relevant to your club, or simply share the post on your page.

There are also free tools you can use as well that make it easier to keep up with heavy posting, such as Buffer, which helps you to schedule posts on Facebook and Twitter ahead of time, as well as track the performance of your posts.

2. Use your club’s hashtag year round

A simple hashtag for your club like the one you might have used for Welcome to the Neighborhood such as #UKHoyas is a great way to start collecting posts from social media throughout the year. Include the hashtag in any relevant post so that you start to build some traction with your local alumni. The more you use the hashtag on your page, the more your followers will use it too. When alumni post using the hashtag, you can easily collect that post by searching your hashtag. This makes it easy to repost a great picture taken by an alum or to make a Storify page at the end of the year capturing all your event highlights.

3. “Pictures remain a top way to attract users”—Forbes

Make your posts stand out to alumni scrolling through their feeds by adding a visual to your posts. Content you can add to your posts includes:

  • Pictures taken at events
  • Website links that display an image
  • Uploaded invitations
  • Designs you create relevant to your post.

A great tool that allows you to design your own images is Canva. Canva gives you access to templates from which you can make a visual that could advertise a specific event or just add something a little more attention grabbing to your post.

Keeping your club’s social media pages up to date with new content, a specialized hashtag, and visuals that jump off the page doesn’t have to feel like work!
