Visit La Porte Narbonnaise (one of the main city gates\, complete with portcullis and drawbridge)\, the Castle of the Counts and the Basilica St. Nazaire\, which harmoniously blends Romanesque and Gothic architectures. The Basilica\, dubbed the “Jewel of the City\,” boasts beautiful stained-glass windows created from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Enjoy free time browsing the Provençal Flower Market. Lunch together at a charming local restaurant. \nFree Time: After lunch\, enjoy a little free time to explore and shop on your own. Or may we suggest doing as the French do–find a sunny terrace and sip a favorite local beverage called a panaché! \nReturn to the ship and enjoy a leisurely afternoon on board before dinner. \nDay 5 | Saturday\, April 25 – NICE | MONTE CARLO\, MONACO B | L | D \nNice. Begin with a drive to Mont Boron to enjoy an unbeatable scenic view of the Old Port of Nice\, the village of Villefranche-sur-Mer\, the Cap-Ferrat peninsula and\, of course\, the famously blue water the Cote d’Azur is named for. Continue on a panoramic tour of some of Nice’s most iconic highlights: Take in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral\, consecrated in 1912 and built to support the Russian nobles who began visiting Nice in the mid-19th century and fell in love with the city. Cruise along Promenade des Anglais—perhaps the most famous image of the French Riviera\, where the cerulean water and pebble beach are lined with palms\, pergolas and signature blue chairs. Marvel at Place Massena\, with its distinctive checkerboard pavement tiles and famous Fontaine du Soleil\, featuring an imposing marble Apollo. Disembark the motor coach in Nice’s Old Town for a walking tour. See the Palace of Kings of Sardinia and beautiful Baroque churches. Stroll down narrow\, shaded streets and into sunny squares. \nFree Time: Back on board\, settle in for a delicious lunch as the ship sails to Monaco. \nMonaco: In this tiny principality—the second-smallest country in the world—the Grimaldi family has led the country since the 13th century. With an expert local guide\, walk through the old town’s charming\, narrow streets and admire the historic buildings and beautiful architecture. Visit the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate\, built in the Roman-Byzantine style in the late 19th century. Many of the Grimaldis are buried here\, including Grace Kelly and Rainier III. Tour the Prince’s Palace\, built as an Italian fortress in A.D. 1191. The Palace recently debuted its restored frescoes from the Renaissance period\, depicting Hercules’s birth\, death and 12 labors—located in the aptly named Hercule Gallery. Marvel at the sumptuous décor in the State Apartments\, home to Monaco’s royals. (Please note: the State Apartments are not accessible to those in wheelchairs.) \nFree Time: Reboard the ship in Monaco Harbor for a relaxing evening and dinner on board. Or stay in town for dinner or sightseeing on your own! Shuttles will run from the ship to Monte Carlo throughout the evening. \nDay 6 | Sunday\, April 26 – GENOA\, ITALY | PORTOFINO B | L | D \nGenoa: Once the world’s wealthiest city and longtime maritime capital\, Genoa has a long history as home to merchants and bankers from great and powerful families. These families contributed to the art and architecture of the city\, specifically by building opulent palaces that they offered up\, in a rotating pattern\, to host state visits from foreign dignitaries. These lavish homes from the 16th and 17th centuries\, and their hosting system (known as Palazzi dei Rolli) is now a UNESCO World Heritage site\, including 42 of the existing Baroque and Renaissance palaces. \nTraveler’s Choice | Choose ONE of the following excursions:\n■ Walking Tour & Pesto Making-  During a walking tour through Genoa’s old town\, navigate the twisting maze of caruggi —narrow\, often cobblestoned streets—and immerse yourself in Genoa’s medieval core with its range of architectural styles\, shops\, restaurants and cafes. Learn the history of the city as you view the stunning San Lorenzo Cathedral with its distinctive black-and-white bands and imposing bell tower. And marvel at the incredible Palazzi dei Rolli. End your tour in one of the palazzi\, where you’ll take part in a pesto sauce- making demonstration and taste many local specialty dishes and wines. (Note: this active excursion involves a longer walk with cobblestones and inclines.)\n■ Motorcoach Tour & Farina Makin –  On this less active tour\, enjoy a scenic drive along the waterfront to see Genoa’s new residential area and trade center. Continue on to view the beautiful palaces and public gardens\, ending at the city’s main square\, Piazza de Ferrari. Take a half-mile walk through the old section of Genoa to view the city palace\, San Lorenzo Cathedral\, the Old Customs House and more. End your tour in a restaurant\, where you’ll take part in a farina-making demonstration and tasting with wine. (Note: this moderate excursion involves less walking.) \nReturn to the ship for lunch on board. \nPortofino: This afternoon we will dock in Portofino\, where you can go ashore and spend free time exploring. This picturesque village was originally named Portus Delphini (Dolphin Harbor)\, which evolved into Portofino. Nowadays\, the beautiful harbor is filled with super-yachts\, and the tiny\, cobbled streets boast high-end boutiques. Despite being the filming location for many movies\, the village retains its natural charm. Climb the steps from the harbor to the Fort of St. George\, built in the mid-1500s\, and visit the fort and nearby St. George’s church. From here\, look across the tree-dotted hillsides and pastel- colored houses and down to the gorgeous cove below. You might also stroll to Castello Brown\, a 16th- century fortress and museum with panoramic views of the town and the sea. Or choose a café with a table near the water’s edge and watch the world go by—no matter what you choose\, the views will be unforgettable! \nReturn to the ship for dinner on board tonight. \nDay 7 | Monday\, April 27 – PORTOVENERE B | L | D \nCinque Terre Excursion. Depart Porto Venere by private boat for an excursion to the UNESCO-inscribed Cinque Terre (Five Lands)\, a collection of five small\, picturesque villages founded around the year 1000. Clinging to the cliffs over the Mediterranean Sea and connected by small footpaths\, the five villages and their trademark colorful buildings are now part of the Cinque Terre National Park. \nVisit the villages of Vernazza\, Monterosso and Porto Venere and enjoy time at leisure visiting the small shops tucked along the winding narrow streets. Wrap up with a walking tour of Porto Venere. \nFree Time: Return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Or linger in Porto Venere for lunch and sightseeing. \nTonight\, savor a delicious dinner on board. \nDay 8 | Tuesday\, April 28 – PORTOFERRAIO\, ELBA B | L | D \nPortoferraio: Stroll through the old town of Portoferraio\, a vital trade center for Greeks and Romans in ancient times. Discover storied Medici fortresses; the Church of Misericordia; Forte Stella\, and Napoleon’s former home of Villa Dei Mulini. See the majestic Napoleonic Theatre of Vigilanti and the Porta di Mare\, a stone gate with a magnificent sea view. Finish up with a walk along the town’s splendid promenade with its exclusive shops and boutiques. \nFree Time: Return to the ship for lunch on board\, and an afternoon at leisure. This evening we gather at our hotel for a briefing on the journey ahead\, followed by a welcome dinner.\nAccommodations: Eurostars Centrale Palace\nMeals: Dinner \nDAY 3: Palermo\nOn this morning’s walking tour\, we discover 2\,700-year-old Palermo’s twin claims to fame: impressive architecture and world-class street food. Highlights include Palermo Cathedral and Palazzo Reale\, both a part of Arab-Norman Palermo\, which is a UNESCO site comprising nine civil and religious structures dating to Norman rule in Sicily (c. 12th century). We also see the Church of San Cataldo\, another of Palermo’s Arab-Norman treasures. Along the way\, we pass through vibrant markets selling arancini\, cannoli\, and other Sicilian specialties – which\, of course\, we stop to sample. The remainder of the day is free for independent exploration. With dinner on our own tonight\, perhaps a culinary adventure is in order – and thanks to Sicily’s strategic Mediterranean location that lured many invaders\, Sicilian food incorporates Italian\, Arabic\, and African influences into a singular and delicious cuisine.\nAccommodations: Eurostars Centrale Palace\nMeals: Breakfast \nDAY 4: Palermo/Erice/Trapani\nA full day of touring takes us first to the medieval walled town of Erice. Perched atop a mountain nearly 2\,500 feet above sea level\, Erice offers panoramic views of the valley below\, the port town of Trapani\, and the Tyrrhenian Sea beyond. We continue to Trapani\, where we visit the region’s famed salt pans. Though the area is a designated nature reserve\, Sicilians still harvest salt here using centuries-old methods; indeed\, the oldest of the area’s 60 working windmills dates to the island’s Arabic regime. We tour the museum here and then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Palermo.\nAccommodations: Eurostars Centrale Palace\nMeals: Breakfast\, Lunch \nDAY 5: Palermo/Monreale/Agrigento\nEn route to Agrigento today\, we stop in nearby Monreale. Sitting on the slopes of Monte Caputo\, Monreale overlooks La Conca d’Oro (or “the Golden Shell”)\, a richly fertile valley studded with groves of orange\, olive\, and almond trees. Here we visit the city’s celebrated cathedral\, another gem of Arab- Norman Palermo and one of the finest examples of Norman architecture still in existence. The imposing main façade and ornate outer cloister serve to prepare us for the cathedral’s breathtaking main sanctuary\, where every inch of wall and ceiling space is covered with painstakingly detailed mosaics. Crafted by artisans from Constantinople (now Istanbul)\, the dazzling mosaics contain some 4\,850 pounds of pure gold. Our journey then continues as we visit a family-owned winery\, followed by a wine tasting and lunch at a nearby country house. Late this afternoon we reach Agrigento and our hotel\, where we dine together tonight.\nAccommodations: Baia di Ulisse\nMeals: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner \nDAY 6: Agrigento\nThis morning we visit the Valley of the Temples\, a UNESCO site and archaeological zone whose ruins of fallen Doric temples and sanctuaries date to Greek rule in the 5th century BCE. Known in its heyday as the “most beautiful city of mortals\,” Agrigento was one of the leading cities during the Golden Age of ancient Greece. Our tour features both the eastern zone\, where we see the beautifully preserved Temple of Concordia (c. 430 BCE)\, and the western zone\, with the massive temple of Olympian Zeus\, believed to be the largest Doric temple ever built. Moving away from the outdoor sites\, we enter Agrigento’s archaeological museum with its exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of this outpost of classical Greece. Then we have lunch at a local restaurant and an afternoon at leisure. This evening\, we visit an organic working farm for a cooking demonstration and dinner.\nAccommodations: Baia di Ulisse\nMeals: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner \nDAY 7: Agrigento/Piazza Armerina/Syracuse\nWe travel across Sicily’s southern reaches today to Syracuse (Siracusa)\, stopping along the way in Piazza Armerina to visit Villa Romana del Casale\, an elaborate 4th-century CE villa and UNESCO site boasting one of the richest and largest collections of mosaics in the Roman world. Thanks to having been buried by landslides\, the villa\, its vivid frescoes\, and the more than 3\,200 square feet of mosaics survived the millennia in remarkably good shape. Following our tour here\, we continue on to Syracuse\, arriving late this afternoon. Once the largest city in the ancient world\, Syracuse today is an alluring spot known for its superb archaeological sites and the relaxed seaside ambience of its Baroque old town.\nAccommodations: Hotel Borgo Pantano\nMeals: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner \nDAY 8: Syracuse\nToday we discover what this city is best known for: the Archaeological Park of Neapolis\, a UNESCO site that comprises a range of ancient monuments. We begin our explorations at the 5th-century BCE Greek theater\, the 16\,000-seat amphitheater where the tragedies of Aeschylus were staged – in his presence – and is still in use today. Next: Latomia del Paradiso (Paradise Quarry)\, the now overgrown shaft from which the white limestone used to build Syracuse was cut. Because it has excellent acoustics\, the quarry also is known as the Ear of Dionysius. We continue on to the Roman amphitheater\, the 1st-century BCE arena that once held gladiator spectacles; today it hosts musicals on its ancient stones. Then we take a walking tour of Ortigia\, the “white pearl” of Sicily\, historical center of Syracuse\, and a UNESCO site.\nAccommodations: Hotel Borgo Pantano\nMeals: Breakfast\, Dinner \nDAY 9: Syracuse\nThis morning we embark on a cruise along Sicily’s Ionian coast\, dotted with tiny islands and caves. We see the Spanish Wall\, 13th-century Castello Maniace which served as a bulwark against invaders in the Middle Ages\, and historic Ortigia Island. We disembark at Ortigia\, where we’re free to explore and enjoy lunch on our own. Late this afternoon we return to our hotel\, where we dine tonight.\nAccommodations: Hotel Borgo Pantano\nMeals: Breakfast\, Dinner \nDAY 10: Syracuse/Mt. Etna/Taormina\nWe depart Syracuse this morning and make our way up the coast to Mt. Etna\, one of Europe’s largest active volcanoes. The ancients believed conical snow-topped Etna to be the forge of Vulcan\, god of fire; today\, Sicilians have a very personal relationship with the volcano\, which frequently erupts but is seldom destructive. Descending from the volcano\, we stop at a private farm set amidst acres of lemon and kiwi groves\, where we enjoy a small group highlight: a homemade lunch prepared by the family who lives here. To accompany our meal\, we sample some excellent Sicilian wines. Then we resume our journey to Taormina\, arriving late this afternoon. This evening is at leisure\, with dinner tonight on our own.\nAccommodations: NH Collection Taormina\nMeals: Breakfast\, Lunch \nDAY 11: Taormina\nThis morning we embark on a walking tour of this delightful medieval town set on a rocky terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea. Highlights include the 3rd-century BCE Greek theater\, where gladiators once battled; the 13th-century fortress-like Duomo; and grand Piazza Vittorio Emanuele\, site of the ancient agora and today an inviting plaza. This afternoon is at leisure to enjoy Taormina as we wish; tonight we celebrate our Sicily adventure over a farewell dinner at our hotel.\nAccommodations: NH Collection Taormina\nMeals: Breakfast\, Dinner \nDAY 12: Depart for U.S.\nWe transfer today to the Catania airport for our return flight to the U.S.\nMeals: Breakfast \nPlease Note: This trip involves full days of sightseeing and considerable walking\, as well as some lengthy coach rides. You should be in good physical condition to enjoy the tour to its fullest. \nIncluded Features:    \n\nRound-trip air transportation from listed cities; all flights within itinerary\n10 nights’ accommodations in Deluxe\, Superior First Class\, and First Class hotels\n22 meals: 10 breakfasts\, 5 lunches\, 7 dinners\nExtensive sightseeing as described\, including all entrance fees\nServices of a professional Tour Director\nPrivate motor-coach transportation throughout your trip\nLuggage handling for one bag per person\nGratuities for local guides\, dining room servers\, airport and hotel porters\, and all drivers\n\nWhat’s not included:\nTaxes; passport\, visas and associated fees; personal expenses such as laundry and telephone calls; accident/sickness\, trip cancellation\, and baggage insurance; excess baggage charges on aircraft; transfers and baggage handling to/from hotel on day of arrival and/or departure if you have booked as a “land only” participant or if you are arriving earlier or later than and/or departing earlier or later than the scheduled group transfer(s); any overnight on land due to flight schedule(s); meals\, alcoholic or other beverages and all other services not specifically mentioned in the “Included Features” section of the program brochure.

Christian churches have occupied this location since the fourth century\, and the current cathedral was built over a period of more than 630 years\, finally completed in 1880. As we cruise the river today\, marvel at the breathtaking vistas\, complete with vineyard terraces along the steep valley walls. These views have inspired great artists\, poets and composers over the past few hundred years—as you glide along this magnificent stretch of river\, perhaps you will be reminded of the paintings of J.M.W. After breakfast on board the ship\, you will disembark for a walking tour. Delos is barely 1.3 square miles\, but it brims with ancient history and also played a role in Greek mythology\, including as the legendary birthplace of the twin gods\, Apollo and Artemis. In Greek mythology\, the small island of Patmos existed under sea level and could only been seen when the moon shone above it. However\, it became more famous in the late first century as the place where an exiled St. John\, the theologian\, wrote both his gospel and the biblical Book of Revelation. A monastery was founded there in the 11th century and it remains a site of pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox study. Religious and secular buildings in its ancient Chora settlement have received UNESCO World Heritage designation. \nOur tour begins with a visit to the Monastery of St. John\, which has a library that houses the sixth century Codex Porphyrius manuscripts of the theologian’s gospels. Experience the wonder of this site before continuing to the Cave of the Apocalypse\, where he is said to have received the Book of Revelation through divine inspiration. The island of Rhodes has had many faces over the millennia\, from its fame in antiquity as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes statue — one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World — to the medieval old town of Rhodes built by the Knights of St. John. While the island attracts visitors today with its cosmopolitan energy and sandy beaches\, it’s also home to several well-preserved archaeological sites\, including an ancient acropolis at Lindos that once served as its capital. Our tour begins in the city of Rhodes\, a UNESCO World Heritage site\, with a stop at its ancient port where the mighty Colossus of Rhodes statue stood before it was destroyed by an earthquake in the third century B.C. Explore the medieval old town as it was built by the Order of St. John of Jerusalem\, which occupied Rhodes from the early 14th century through the 16th century. Visit the Palace of the Grand Masters\, a formidable Gothic castle that houses a treasure trove of art\, furniture and icons from that era. \nReturn to the ship for lunch\, followed by an afternoon at leisure. Those looking for an active afternoon may join a walking tour to the acropolis of Lindos. \nThose who choose to explore ancient Lindos will walk through its narrow\, cobbled streets — past the colorful courtyards and mosaics for which it is so famous — and up more than 200 steps to the legendary acropolis. At a height of 535 feet\, this iconic site offers breathtaking views and photo opportunities of the entire village\, including its medieval castle\, sandy beaches and charming whitewashed\, sugar-cubed houses. After a guided tour of the acropolis\, walk back down to the village and return to the ship. This evening\, you will enjoy a traditional folklore show with local musicians and dancers\, followed by dinner on board. \nDay 7 | September 15 SANTORINI B | L | D\nThis morning the ship arrives in Santorini\, the most famous of the Cyclades islands. You will disembark after breakfast for a full day of exploring. A crescent-shaped island featuring 1\,000-foot-cliffs and a spectacular caldera\, Santorini was shaped by a volcanic explosion about 3\,600 years ago and has shifted over the centuries as the volcano erupted. In some ancient myths\, this destruction is associated with the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. With early inhabitants traced as far back as in the Neolithic era\, this island has a rich and storied past that extends from antiquity to its reputation today as a chic\, modern destination. \nEnjoy a scenic drive to the southern end of the island for a guided tour of the excavations of Akrotiri\, a unique archeological site that dates to prehistoric times. Excavations that began in 1967 reveal an amazing city with houses\, squares and workshops that were covered under a thick blanket of pumice during a massive eruption in the 17th century B.C. Further research shows that the island of Santorini was once the center of Greek civilization\, akin to the Minoans of Crete. In fact\, some refer to this site as a Minoan Pompeii. Your tour concludes in Santorini’s cosmopolitan capital city of Fira\, spectacularly perched high above sea level. You have time to explore Fira on your own or ride a cable car to the pier\, where a tender will return you to the ship. \nReturn to the boat for lunch. \nFree Time: Enjoy an afternoon to explore Santorini on your own. \nReturn to the ship for dinner. \nDay 8 | September 16 MILOS B | L | R | D\nToday the ship arrives in Milos\, a volcanic island in the East Cyclades known for its abundance of sandy beaches and stunning topography. It was on this remote island that pieces of the world-famous Venus de Milo marble statue were discovered in 1820. Though most of it was reassembled and presented to King Louis XVIII (who later donated it to the Louvre) the arms of the ancient female figure believed to represent Aphrodite were never found. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Milos\, which features exhibits that date from the Neolithic period through late antiquity. Located in a neoclassical building in the dramatically situated\, car-free village of Plaka\, the museum also has a modern replica of the original first century B.C. statue. After the museum you will explore the ancient theater and early Christian catacombs in Plaka. \nReturn to the ship for lunch on board\, followed by a relaxing afternoon at leisure.
