Nara’s verdant green parkland is also home to more than 1\,000 sika deer. Friendly and free-roaming\, these sacred creatures are considered divine messengers of the gods and are highly protected wildlife. \nNext explore the UNESCO-listed Tōdai-ji Temple and view its nearly 50-foot tall bronze Great Buddha statue. According to historical records\, more than 2.6 million people helped construct the statue and its surrounding hall\, contributing materials like wood and metal\, with 350\,000 laborers working directly on the statue’s construction. \nContinue to Kasuga Taisha\, a shrine dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. Hundreds of bronze lanterns\, donated by worshipers and lit only twice a year during festivals\, hang from the various buildings. \nGather for a group lunch before continuing to Kyoto by motor coach. Check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day and evening at leisure to explore independently. \nOvernight: The Westin Miyako Kyoto \n\n\n Day 5: Kyoto  \n(B\,D) \nThis morning visit the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design\, which showcases the traditional crafts and industries of Kyoto including lacquerware\, textiles\, woodworking\, metalwork and basketry. \nBreak for lunch on your own and time to explore the ancient pedestrian streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka independently. Then rejoin the group for a tour and tasting at a local sake brewery. \nAfterward tour Fushimi Inari Taisha\, a shrine famous for its thousands of bright red-orange torii gates straddling the property’s paths and trails. Have a camera ready to capture shots of Mt. Enjoy leisure time to explore followed by a visit to Hannoki Oshino\, the historic village nearby. \nContinue to the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko\, stopping at Oishi Park for stunning panoramic views and prime photography opportunities of Mt. Fuji and the lake. \nNext visit Arakura Fuji Sengen\, dedicated to the deity of Mt. Fuji. Take advantage of additional photography opportunities from the pagoda’s vantage point. \nUpon arrival in Tokyo check into your sophisticated accommodations and enjoy the evening at leisure to explore the city’s abundant dining and entertainment options. \nOvernight: ANA InterContinental Tokyo \n\n\n Day 11: Tokyo  \n(B\,L) \nFollowing breakfast visit Meiji Shrine\, dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife\, Empress Shoken. While exploring the grounds perhaps take part in a traditional Shinto activity like making an offering at the main hall or writing out a wish on an ema (wooden plaque). \nAfterward take a guided panoramic tour of the Shibuya Crossing\, a bustling shopping and entertainment hub. \nConclude the day with an inside visit to the Tokyo National Museum\, home to a collection of approximately 600 pieces of art and artifacts including paintings\, calligraphic works\, sculptures\, decorative arts and archaeological relics spanning millennia of Japanese history. \nOvernight: ANA InterContinental Tokyo \n\n\n Day 12: Tokyo  \n(B\,D) \nThis morning explore Tokyo Imperial Palace and the Imperial Palace East Gardens\, a tranquil oasis on the former grounds of Edo Castle. \nContinue to Tokyo Tower\, the country’s tallest\, for unbeatable 360º views over the urban expanse from the observation deck. \nEnjoy lunch on your own and independent leisure time to explore Ginza\, Tokyo’s high-end shopping district. This famous entertainment center features an extensive variety of department stores\, boutiques\, art galleries and restaurants. \nLater rejoin the group for an interactive origami workshop. Try your hand at creating your own Japanese paper artwork to take home as a memento of your experience. \nThis evening gather together for a special farewell dinner to commemorate your time in Japan. \nOvernight: ANA InterContinental Tokyo \n\n\n Day 13: Tokyo • Depart for U.S.  \n(B) \nAfter breakfast guests departing during the suggested times take the complimentary transfer to Haneda Airport for flights home. \n\n\n(Itinerary subject to change.) \n\n\nActivity Level: 4\nActive\n\nTour days tend to be long and include many full-day excursions via various modes of transportation\, flow at a brisk pace and may include extended travel days with morning and/or evening activities. Excursions may require standing and walking to city centers where motor coaches are prohibited\, along with extended periods of walking and standing on uneven surfaces including cobblestones and paths and/or trails that may be gravel\, sand\, dirt or other unpaved surface. Scheduled activities may require physical effort or have distinct variations in altitude and/or temperature. Guests are expected to board transportation without assistance. Elevators are not always available at accommodations or sites visited. \n\n\n• Guests should be easily able to walk a minimum of 10\,000 steps (or 4-5 miles) per day. \n• Due to local restrictions\, the guest drop-off point is typically a 15-minute +/- walk to the entrance of various sites. Guests must be able to walk at a steady\, moderate pace for 15 or more minutes on gravel or inclined pathways. \n• Many sites have historic stone stairs. Guests should be able to climb and descend 40-50 stairs at a time that may be uneven. \n• The Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine has upwards of 400 stairs to ascend to the top. \n• Some included meals feature Japanese-style seating where guests will dine at a low table\, sitting on the floor with room to extend legs comfortably in a sunken alcove beneath the table. Guests must be able to lower to the floor and rise without assistance as well as sit for a full meal without back support. \n• In Hakone the accommodations feature traditional Japanese-style bed frames.
