Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Centre of Florence\, the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to masterpieces of unparalleled art\, architecture and literature\, on a walking tour of the historic city center. Admire Filippo Brunelleschi’s iconic dome on the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore\, known as the Florence Duomo\, known for Brunelleschi’s Dome — completed in 1436\, with Gothic and Renaissance elements. Approaching Cinque Terre from the water is an unforgettable experience. Its five villages appear like vibrant jewels set into the rugged cliffs of the Ligurian coastline\, with clusters of colorful buildings and houses clinging to the dramatic cliffsides overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Above\, green terrace vineyards are carved into the hills\, and ancient footpaths and staircases zigzag up the cliffs connecting the homes and vineyards. Bonifacio Old Town Tram & Walking Tour. Your discovery of this dramatically situated medieval town begins with a tram ride from the harbor to the Haute Ville\, or upper town\, and around the plateau along the cliffs to enjoy panoramic views. You will then stroll through Bonifacio’s 9th-century citadel\, perched high on a limestone promontory\, to see such historic landmarks as Place Bir Hakeim\, St. Jean Baptiste church and Le Grain de Sable — a weathered rock formation that appears to collapse into the sea. Savor the splendor of the Jardin des Vestiges and see where Napoleon stayed in 1793. This seaside town of rose‑flushed buildings was built into picturesque cliffs high above the Tyrrhenian Sea and\, as the world’s limoncello capital\, is abundant with fragrant lemon and orange groves. \nTraveler’s Choice | Choose one of the following included excursions.\n▪ Pompeii Tour. Engulfed by the tephra of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.\, the ancient city of Pompeii was frozen in time for centuries. Excavated 17 centuries after petrification\, the UNESCO-designated ruins intimately reveal Roman daily rituals during Emperor Titus’ reign. Take a panoramic drive to Pompeii where you will explore on foot to see the wealthy Vetti family estate\, the extraordinary and earliest surviving stone amphitheater of the Roman world and the Temple of Jupiter. Admire the natural splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage‑designated Mediterranean seascape on a panoramic drive through secluded villages and past opulent villas and sun‑drenched beaches. Stop in the iconic coastal village of Positano. Renowned for its colorful cliffside houses\, crystal-clear waters and Mediterranean charm\, the town cascades down the steep mountainside to the sea\, creating stunning panoramic views at every turn. Its lively\, narrow labyrinth of streets is dotted with vibrant bougainvillea and filled with charming cafés\, boutique shops and art\ngalleries. You may also look for the ancient perfumery of the Certosa. \nReturn to the ship for dinner on board or choose to stay in Capri longer for dinner on your own this evening. \nDay 8 | May 25 SALERNO B | L | D\nEnjoy breakfast on board this morning as the ship arrives in Salerno\, where you will disembark with Professor Eisenhower for a visit to the Museum of the Landing and Salerno as Capital. \nA Day in Salerno: Begin today with a special visit to the Museum of the Landing and Salerno as Capital\, accompanied by Professor David Eisenhower. The museum is dedicated to the events of Operation Avalanche\, the Allied landing on September 9\, 1943\, as part of the broader Italian Campaign\, and the period when Salerno briefly served as Italy’s capital during World War II. Exhibits include maps\, photographs and military artifacts such as WWII uniforms\, weapons\, field equipment and jeeps used by both Allied and Axis forces\, offering a glimpse into wartime conditions. A large-scale diorama recreates the landing\, showing troop movements and key locations\, and personal testimonies and videos provide an immersive experience of wartime Salerno. You’ll learn about this lesser-known chapter of WWII history and gain a deeper understanding of Salerno’s strategic importance in shaping post-war Italy. \nAfter the museum\, take a guided walk through Salerno’s historic center to appreciate the charming mix of medieval streets\, historic landmarks and coastal beauty. Discover the Duomo di Salerno\, a stunning 11th-century Norman\, baroque and Romanesque- style cathedral with a striking 12th-century Norman-Arab bell town\, standing at 184 feet tall. The cathedral houses the tomb of Saint Matthew the Evangelist\, one of the Twelve Apostles\, in its marble crypt decorated with frescoes.
