December 2017 Tax Legislation FAQs

Tax legislation passed in December 2017 adjusts marginal tax rates and nearly doubles the standard deduction; either or both of these changes could affect the deductibility or net cost to donors of charitable contributions. As a result, it could be in your favor to accelerate certain types of giving and thereby ensure gifts are fully deductible to the extent of current tax law.

The Office of Advancement cannot offer tax or legal advice; please consult financial and legal advisors to determine how the legislation will affect your personal circumstances. We have answered a few frequently asked questions below, and we are available to complement your advisors’ guidance with support as you plan your end-of-year giving. Frequently Asked Questions

I am in the middle of a multi-year pledge. What are my options?

You may, of course, continue to pay your pledge according to the schedule you devised at initiation.

If it would be advantageous to make early payments, please keep in mind that after a year of historic gains in the financial markets, a gift of appreciated securities could be an ideal way to fulfill your pledge while also realizing a charitable deduction and potentially avoiding capital gains tax.

How do I make a gift of stocks or securities?

  • DTC Number: 0221
  • Account Number: 3B-48090-WB
  • Account Name: Georgetown University
  • Broker Information: UBS Financial Services/the Finnerty Group

Prior to transferring your shares, please complete the stock transfer form or email the name and number of shares you will be transferring to stocktransfer@georgetown.edu. Georgetown is unable to sell unidentified shares.

Are there any other provisions of the tax legislation I should be aware of?

If you hold or are considering acquiring Georgetown athletics season tickets, please note that the new tax law eliminates the 80% charitable deduction for gifts associated expressly with college athletic event seating rights. Making your season ticket-related gift in 2017 may allow you to preserve the current tax benefits.
