Make 'Em Laugh

Though you wouldn't know it from the somber atmosphere of Lauinger Library's study carrels, Georgetown has educated some of this generation's funniest folks from the silver screen to SNL. Here, in their own words, four of our most prominent alumni in comedy give us a behind-the-scenes look at the perks of the job, the future of comedy in the digital age and what makes something funny—or not.

Owen Burke (C’94)

Once the host of Georgetown's Funniest Person on Campus show, Owen Burke (C'94) honed his comedic chops on the Hilltop in an improv group, Rebels without Applause. Now he's a driving force behind online video sensation Funny or Die and an executive producer at Gary Sanchez Productions alongside comedy gods Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.

Nick Kroll (C'01)

Long before Nick Kroll (C'01) was cast as one of the stars of the hit FX series The League, he bombed his first shot at stand-up at Georgetown. Luckily for us—and the rest of the laugh-loving world—Kroll didn't let that setback stop him from working his way into a slew of roles on television and some of today's funniest films.

Alison Becker (C'99)

Alison Becker (C'99) paved the way for fellow Hoya comedians with her sharp writing and impeccable comic delivery, featured in a recurring role on Parks and Recreation and a new Web series, Dating Rules from my Future Self, with Shiri Appleby.

John Mulaney (C’04)

A rising star in the field of comedy, John Mulaney (C'04) cut his teeth on the stand-up circuit while crashing on Nick Kroll's couch. Now he lends his writing talents to Saturday Night Live and recently aired a much-hyped hour-long special on Comedy Central.
