Dental Alumni Board
Greetings to all Dental Alumni,
As we begin another year as Georgetown Dental Alumni, I would like to bring everyone up to date on what your dental alumni board has accomplished recently on our behalf.
Over the past few years your Alumni Board has started two study clubs in order to provide a venue to bring former graduates together. One is the Georgetown Dental Alumni Study Club, Washington D.C. Chapter which meets during fall and winter in the D.C. area. The second is the Georgetown Dental Alumni Study Club, New York Chapter which meets in New York City, typically in March. These study clubs have been a great success and offer an opportunity for alumni to share their professional and personal experiences in a learning environment. Your alumni board will continue to support these study clubs and look for opportunities to develop new study clubs where an interest has been shown.
Your board has made our presence more visible on campus with the design of our new logo and banner that will hang on the wall in the Basic Science Building lower hall alongside banners from other medical specialty disciplines. The new banner can be seen on our alumni newsletter and also on this Web site.
We are in the process of replacing the Dental School cast plaque at the bottom of the stairs leading from Reservoir Road to the Medical Dental Building. Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D. (W’86), dean for medical education, School of Medicine, has committed funds to replacing the plaque. We are also having the portrait of Dr. William N. Cogan, the first dean of the Dental Department at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine, cleaned and moved to a prominent position in the South Lobby in the Med-Dent Building.
We had the largest number of returning alumni attend this year’s Dental Reunion, which was held May 28-31, in conjunction with Main Campus Reunion. We had the Friday night reception in the Med-Dent building’s foyer where Dr. Mitchell spoke and mentioned that “the Dental Alumni remain a vital and integral part of Georgetown University”. Saturday we had continuing education available during the day and class parties that evening. On Sunday, we had a mass and a brunch to end the weekend.
I feel that our presence at Georgetown is stronger than it has been in years. Your Alumni Board is making strides to continue our unity as a group and as a voice that is still heard on the university campus. I encourage you to remain involved with your classmates and to make plans to attend your next Dental Reunion.
